About the project

Justice in Transition is a multi-country research initiative by the Indian Forum for Public Diplomacy (IFPD) that examines how nations navigate the shift to low-carbon futures while safeguarding equity, livelihoods, and community wellbeing. Bringing together student-researchers from universities across India, the project studies how policies, institutions, and economic systems shape the fairness of transition pathways. By analysing diverse models from India, South Africa, Indonesia, Germany, and Canada, the project explores how justice principles are embedded or neglected within national transition strategies, and what this means for workers, communities, and the environment.

Over several months, the research teams have developed detailed policy analyses, sectoral assessments, stakeholder mappings, and implementation studies. The project culminates in a series of country policy briefs, comprehensive transition reports, and the Just Transition Policy Index a comparative tool evaluating the justice orientation of transition policies across countries. Together, these outputs aim to strengthen public understanding, support evidence-based policy dialogue, and contribute to emerging global conversations on how to build transitions that are not only sustainable, but fundamentally just.
