The Republic of Seychelles, an island-nation located in the Indian Ocean in the east coast of Africa, home to natural reserves and beautiful beaches, has old and strong ties with India. Seychelles, whose population comprises Indians and Indian descendants, due to their history of colonial rule, has cultural and historical links with India. Seychelles is important to India on matters of Indian Ocean security, Maritime trade relations and security, climate issues, and countering China’s expansionist projects in the Indian Ocean. While India has been an important and a dependent actor in Seychelles affairs since long, on various issues like- infrastructure and monetary support, patrolling and anti-smuggling practises, building its maritime security, climate and ecological concerns.

Seychelles’s diplomatic mission to India started out in 2008. However, the Republic of India always supported Seychelles in its infrastructural developments, maritime concerns and various other issues. INS Nilgiri, the Indian naval ship, took part in the Independence day celebrations of Seychelles in 1979. India also gave infrastructural support time and again by gifting patrol boats like PS Topaz, PS Constant,  maritime surveillance aircrafts and much more. During the visit of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in 2015, Coastal Surveillance Radar System(CSRS) was also inaugurated,  to emphasize maritime security. India also supported Seychelles in the Solar panel energy system, by the Solar Alliance in 2015. Seychelles requires security support and support in its business, tourism, which is a major part of its economy, and in recent times, covid  vaccination requirements.

The Indian Ocean is a major strategic concern for India, and co-operation of  smaller countries  present in the area like Mauritius, Seychelles in maritime security is essential. As part of India’s SAGAR, under which certain assistance to Indian ocean nations was provided by India- with flood relief, solar power assistance and more. With China’s growing importance in world affairs and its expansionist policies and the strategic importance of the island nations like Sri Lanka, Mauritius and Seychelles will determine the fate of the Indian Ocean and India’s interests. India’s Blue Economy Protocol, 2015 also has common interests of Seychelles and India, like climate change, conservation, maritime interests etc.

Seychelles and India, both with their historical, cultural and geo-political links could mutually benefit one another.   Indian Ocean security and China’s overarching expansionism could be tackled if both Republic of Seychelles and India cooperate.
